Most people think of their NHS pharmacy in Hucclecote as the place to collect a prescription. But the NHS now funds community pharmacies to do far more than dispense medicines, and many of these services are free, quick and available without a GP appointment. At Hucclecote Pharmacy in Gloucester, we regularly meet patients who didn't know they could be treated for a sore throat, have their blood pressure checked, or get support with a new medicine, all without booking a GP slot.
This guide explains the free NHS pharmacy services that are commissioned in England, who they're for, and how to use them. It covers Pharmacy First, the New Medicine Service, NHS blood pressure checks, contraception services, and some lesser-known extras. Availability of some services can vary between pharmacies, so if you're unsure whether a particular service is running at our community pharmacy in Hucclecote, GL3, just ask the team or call 01452 616906. For a wider comparison of NHS and paid-for options, see our guide to NHS vs private pharmacy services.
What 'community pharmacy' means for you
A community pharmacy is a high-street or local pharmacy that serves the public directly, as opposed to a hospital pharmacy. In England, community pharmacies are contracted by the NHS to provide a set of essential services, such as dispensing prescriptions and disposing of unwanted medicines, and can also offer advanced services such as Pharmacy First and blood pressure checks.
Every pharmacy and pharmacist is regulated by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). Pharmacists train for five years, including a foundation year, and many, like our lead pharmacist, go on to qualify as independent prescribers.
For you, this means a few practical things:
- No appointment for advice. You can walk in and speak to a pharmacist about symptoms, medicines or minor illnesses.
- A private space to talk. Consultations take place in a private consultation room, not across the counter.
- Joined-up care. For NHS services, the pharmacy can share relevant information with your GP, so your records stay up to date.
- Longer opening hours than many GP surgeries, and often no queue on the phone.
Community pharmacy also plays a growing role in easing pressure on GP practices in Gloucestershire. When minor illnesses and routine checks are handled in a pharmacy, GP appointments are freed up for people who need them most. Patients from Hucclecote, Brockworth, Barnwood, Abbeydale and Longlevens all use our pharmacy this way.
Pharmacy First: seven conditions treated free at your local chemist
Pharmacy First, launched by NHS England in 2024 and available at Hucclecote Pharmacy for patients across Gloucester, lets pharmacists assess and treat seven common conditions without you needing to see a GP. Where clinically appropriate, the pharmacist can supply prescription-only treatment, including some antibiotics and antiviral medicines, following strict NHS clinical pathways.
| Condition | Who can be treated | What the pharmacist can do |
|---|---|---|
| Sinusitis | Age 12 and over | Assess symptoms, advise, and supply treatment such as a steroid nasal spray or antibiotics if needed |
| Sore throat | Age 5 and over | Use a clinical scoring tool to decide whether antibiotics are likely to help |
| Earache (acute otitis media) | Age 1 to 17 | Examine the ear and supply treatment where appropriate |
| Infected insect bites | Age 1 and over | Assess the bite and supply antibiotics if it is infected |
| Impetigo | Age 1 and over | Supply antibacterial cream or antibiotics depending on severity |
| Shingles | Age 18 and over | Supply antiviral treatment if started early enough |
| Uncomplicated UTI | Women aged 16 to 64 | Assess symptoms and supply antibiotics where appropriate |
The consultation is free. If you're given a prescription-only medicine, the usual NHS prescription charge applies unless you're exempt, for example if you're under 16, aged 60 or over, pregnant, or hold a valid exemption certificate. Pharmacy medicines that you could buy anyway may be recommended instead where that's the right treatment.
You can walk in, or be referred by your GP practice or NHS 111. If your symptoms fall outside the pathway, for example you're outside the age range or there are warning signs, the pharmacist will refer you to your GP or another service. Our Pharmacy First page has more detail about how the service works at Hucclecote Pharmacy.
New Medicine Service (NMS): free follow-up when you start a new medicine
Starting a new long-term medicine can raise questions. Is this side effect normal? Am I taking it at the right time? What if I miss a dose? The New Medicine Service gives you structured, free support from a pharmacist in the first few weeks, when problems are most likely to come up.
The NMS is for people who have just been prescribed a new medicine for certain long-term conditions, including:
- Asthma and COPD
- Type 2 diabetes
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Heart conditions, and medicines that thin the blood (antiplatelets and anticoagulants)
Here's how it usually works. When you collect your first prescription, the pharmacist explains the medicine and asks whether you'd like to join. A week or two later, you have a short follow-up conversation, in person or by phone, to talk about how you're getting on. A final check-in a few weeks after that makes sure any issues have been resolved. If there's a problem the pharmacist can't fix, they'll contact your GP.
Research has shown that many people stop taking a new medicine, or take it incorrectly, within the first few weeks. The NMS exists to catch those problems early. It's quick, confidential and free, and you can ask about it whenever you collect a new prescription. Our New Medicine Service page explains the service in more detail, and our NMS guide covers eligible medicines and the three stages.
NHS Hypertension Case-Finding: free blood pressure checks
High blood pressure rarely causes symptoms, which is why it's sometimes called a "silent" condition. Left untreated, it increases the risk of heart attack, stroke and kidney disease. The NHS estimates that millions of adults in England have high blood pressure without knowing it.
The NHS Hypertension Case-Finding Service funds community pharmacies to offer free blood pressure checks to:
- Adults aged 40 and over who haven't been diagnosed with high blood pressure
- People referred by their GP practice for a check
The check itself takes a few minutes in a private consultation room. You sit quietly for a short time, then a validated monitor records your reading. If the result is normal, you'll get advice on keeping it that way. If it's raised, you may be offered ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, a small device you wear for 24 hours at home that gives a more reliable picture. The results are shared with your GP, who will decide whether you need treatment. A very high reading would mean a same-day referral.
A few tips for an accurate reading: avoid caffeine and smoking for 30 minutes beforehand, wear a short-sleeved or loose top, and let us know if you've been rushing to get to the pharmacy.
Ask the team or call 01452 616906 to confirm current availability and arrange a check. If you've already been diagnosed with high blood pressure and have started a new medicine for it, the New Medicine Service described above may also apply.
NHS Contraception Service and other lesser-known free services
The NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service lets participating community pharmacies start or continue the oral contraceptive pill without you needing a GP appointment. The pharmacist checks your blood pressure, BMI and medical history, discusses options, and can supply the pill free of charge, with information shared with your GP. It's useful if you're starting the pill for the first time, or if your repeat supply is running low and you can't get a GP appointment. Ask us whether we can offer this service on the day.
Emergency contraception is available free on the NHS to eligible patients at Hucclecote Pharmacy. It works best the sooner it's taken, so don't wait. Our emergency contraception service and our emergency contraception guide explain the options and timings.
Other free services many people don't know about include:
- NHS flu vaccination for eligible groups each autumn, including people aged 65 and over, pregnant women and those with certain long-term conditions. See our flu vaccination service.
- Medicines disposal. You can return unwanted or out-of-date medicines to any pharmacy for safe disposal, free. Please don't put them in the bin or down the toilet.
- Discharge Medicines Service. If you've recently left hospital with changes to your medicines, the hospital can refer you to your community pharmacy so a pharmacist can check everything matches up.
- Urgent medicine supply. If you've run out of a regular medicine and can't reach your GP, NHS 111 can refer you to a pharmacy for an emergency supply.
- Healthy living advice and signposting on topics such as stopping smoking, alcohol, diet and physical activity, including referral to local NHS support.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do NHS pharmacy services really cost nothing?
The consultations and checks themselves are free. That includes Pharmacy First consultations, the New Medicine Service, NHS blood pressure checks and pharmacy contraception consultations. If a Pharmacy First consultation leads to a prescription-only medicine being supplied, the standard NHS prescription charge applies unless you are exempt, for example because you are under 16, aged 60 or over, or hold a valid exemption certificate.
Which conditions does Pharmacy First cover?
Pharmacy First covers seven common conditions: sinusitis (age 12 and over), sore throat (age 5 and over), earache (age 1 to 17), infected insect bites (age 1 and over), impetigo (age 1 and over), shingles (age 18 and over), and uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women aged 16 to 64. The pharmacist follows NHS clinical pathways and can supply treatment, including some antibiotics, where appropriate.
Do I need an appointment for a Pharmacy First consultation?
No. You can walk in to Hucclecote Pharmacy during opening hours and ask to be seen under Pharmacy First. Your GP practice or NHS 111 can also refer you to us directly. If you would prefer to call ahead to check how busy we are, ring 01452 616906. Consultations take place in our private consultation room, and you do not need to be registered with a particular GP.
Can I get a free blood pressure check at Hucclecote Pharmacy?
The NHS funds free blood pressure checks in community pharmacies for adults aged 40 and over who have not been diagnosed with high blood pressure. If your reading is raised, you may be offered a 24-hour monitor to wear at home, and results are shared with your GP. Ask our team or call 01452 616906 to confirm current availability and arrange a check.
Can I get contraception through the NHS pharmacy service?
Yes. Under the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service, participating pharmacies can start or continue the contraceptive pill without you needing a GP appointment, free of charge. Emergency contraception is also available free on the NHS to eligible patients at Hucclecote Pharmacy. Ask the team or call 01452 616906 to check which contraception services we can offer you on the day.
Why should I choose an independent community pharmacy over a chain?
Every NHS community pharmacy in England, independent or chain, works to the same NHS service specifications and is regulated by the GPhC. What an independent pharmacy can offer is continuity: a small team that gets to know you and your medicines, decisions made locally, and the same pharmacist you can ask for again. The best choice is the pharmacy that is convenient for you and that you trust.
How do I make Hucclecote Pharmacy my nominated pharmacy?
You can nominate Hucclecote Pharmacy in the NHS App under your prescriptions settings, ask your GP surgery to update your record, use our online nomination form, or simply ask us in person. Once nominated, your GP sends prescriptions electronically to us, ready for collection. Changing your nomination is free, and you can change it again at any time.
